Hedvika Velišček

As a child Hedvika loved drawing and remembers that she drew on rocks with brick fragments, whenever possible. Later she began to create a variety of handicrafts, working together with her mother and grandmother and more recently with her granddaughter Natalie. The handicrafts are her joy and her life. She also loves painting, particularly landscapes of her country of birth.

Hedvika Veliscek was born in Nova Gorica 1.1.1927 at a time when this region of Slovenia belonged to Italy. She remembers that she was forbidden to speak Slovenian and was punished by the teacher for speaking it.

She married Ivan Velišček and left for Australia with husband and two children, Drago and Irena in 1958. She vividly remembers how life was hard and that she worked 7 days a week for the first 15 years.
