Marija Uršič

Marija excels in making Idrija bobbin-lace. She has passed her skills on to others, Slovenes and Australians alike, in many courses, ethnic festivals, and exhibitions in Melbourne.

“Many people admire the Slovene national costume and Idrija lace. At the Slovene Planica festival a woman said to me 'I hope you will pass it on', meaning that I would teach it to others. There are always lots of questions and as soon as I’ve explained things to one person, the next one is already asking.”

Marija was eight years old when her mother started to teach her to make bobbin-lace. She was indeed born in the environs of Cerkno where Idrija lace is common. In Australia, she added new motifs to the traditional ones, for instance amiable kangaroos shaped in Idrija bobbin-lace.

Marija Uršič, a native of the environs of Cerkno, has lived in Australia for nearly fifty years and resides in Melbourne.
