Marija Horvat

She learned knitting, crocheting and cross stitching at the home farm and has enjoyed needlework since her childhood.

“But there was hardly any time at home, because we had to work hard on the farm and I was the only child who stayed at home. When I came to Australia I had to work hard again, but I used the time I spent on the train and the evenings for my needlework.”

She has cross stitched many large table-cloths and crocheted or knitted many ornamental mats and handkerchiefs, knitted jackets and shawls. Her cross-stitched tapestries still adorn her home.

Marija Horvat is a native of the environs of Ptuj. She has lived in Australia for decades and resides in Melbourne.
