Clara Brčar

Clara Brčar

Clara likes all kinds of handicrafts, embroidery and knitting, tapestry and crochet work, including making clothes for babies. She has also tried her hand with painting and produced a considerable number of water colours and oil paintings. Interesting are her pumpkin husks, which she decorated with oil paints and polished to make interesting decorative pieces.

Born in Ilirska Bistrica in 1949 Clara and her family left Slovenia when she was seven years old. She came to Australia in 1959.

She was introduced to embroidery, while in camp in Italy, at the age of 8. The children were taught by a priest, who said that embroidery was the best way to keep them occupied. It was a happy time full of wonderful memories and embroidery is still a reminder of the home country. It set Clara’s interest in handicrafts for life.
